2. Swiss (Google Docs built-in template)
Swiss resume template in Google Docs
Swiss is a minimalist template with a two-column layout, plenty of white space and a bright accent colour. It opens with a skills section, which makes it useful when your skills are stronger than your work history.
Best for: Freshers, career changers, skills-based resumes
Tip: You can change the orange accent to a softer colour if you apply to conservative industries like banking.
3. Serif (Google Docs built-in template)
Serif resume template in Google Docs
Serif has a more traditional look, with a serif font, a large name header and several sections, including space for projects and languages. It suits people who have a bit more to show.
Best for: Teachers, administrators, experienced professionals
Tip: Delete any section you cannot fill well. An empty-looking section hurts more than a missing one.
4. Coral (Google Docs built-in template)
Coral resume template in Google Docs
Coral uses a single-column layout with a friendly coral accent colour. It looks modern but stays simple, so it is easy to read on screen and on paper.
Best for: Customer service, retail, hospitality, creative roles
Tip: The default greeting-style header is playful. For formal jobs, replace it with just your name.
5. Spearmint (Google Docs built-in template)
Spearmint resume template in Google Docs
Spearmint is spacious and bold, with a thick green line at the top, a large name and green section titles. The one-column layout makes it simple to scan.
Best for: Marketing, sales, startups
Tip: Keep bullet points short so the extra spacing does not push your resume onto a second page.
6. Modern Writer (Google Docs built-in template)
Modern Writer resume template in Google Docs
Modern Writer has a retro, typewriter-style font and a pink accent. It stands out, which is great for creative work but may be too bold for some corporate roles.
Best for: Writers, designers, content creators
Tip: Pair it with a link to your portfolio or writing samples near the top.
7. Simple ATS-friendly resume (build it from a blank Google Doc)
Some large companies scan resumes with software (an applicant tracking system, or ATS) before a person reads them. Plain, single-column resumes are the safest choice for these systems. You can make one yourself in about ten minutes:
Open a blank document in Google Docs and set margins to about 0.7 inch (File > Page setup).
Type your name in bold, 18–22 pt, with your phone, email, city and LinkedIn link on the next line.
Add these headings in bold: Summary, Skills, Experience, Projects, Education.
Use one clear font (Arial, Calibri or Roboto) at 10.5–12 pt, and plain round bullet points.
Avoid tables, text boxes, icons and images. Software sometimes cannot read them.
Best for: Online job portals, large companies, government and bank jobs
How to open Google's built-in resume templates
Go to Google Docs and sign in.
Click Template gallery at the top of the page.
Scroll down to the Resumes section.
Click a template. A copy opens in your Google Drive.
Rename the file (for example, Rahim-Ahmed-Resume) and replace the sample text with your own details.
How to choose the right template
Match the industry. Banks, government and corporate jobs prefer simple layouts. Design, media and startups allow more colour.
Match your experience. Freshers should pick a layout that puts skills, education and projects first. Experienced candidates need more room for work history.
Think about how you will apply. If you are uploading to a job portal, choose a simple single-column design. If you are emailing a hiring manager directly, a stylish layout is fine.
Keep it to one page if you have less than about five years of experience.

Frequently asked questions
Are Google Docs resume templates really free?
Yes. The templates in the Google Docs template gallery are free with any Google account, and our template #1 above is also free to download with no sign-up. Premium templates are optional if you want a more unique design.
Are Google Docs resumes ATS-friendly?
Most can be read by applicant tracking systems, but simple single-column layouts are safest. Multi-column templates, tables and text boxes can sometimes confuse the software. If you are applying through a large job portal, use template #7 or a simple one-column design, and upload a PDF or Word file unless the job post asks for something else.
How do I download my Google Docs resume as a PDF or Word file?
Open your resume, click File > Download, and choose PDF Document (.pdf) or Microsoft Word (.docx). Open the downloaded file once to check that the layout and fonts look the same as in Google Docs.
